Iraqi Forces Gun Down Female IS Sniper in West Mosul

Iraqi forces eliminated one of the most dangerous Islamic State (IS) snipers in western Mosul, a source from the Iraqi forces said on Sunday.

Forces of the 9th Armored Division and the federal police killed a Libyan woman working as a sniper in the ranks of IS, operating in a district in western Mosul, a security source told Sputnik.

The woman was known under the name Maria, and is believed to be responsible for killing and injuring hundreds of innocent civilians in Mosul.

The source further revealed that the female sniper was hiding in one of the apartment buildings in al-Zanjili district in the western part of Mosul. She was shot after trying to leave the building, which was later recaptured by the Iraqi forces.

However, according to the anonymous source, there is a significant number of women working as snipers for the IS, for that and other reasons, the Iraqi forces imposed a temporary ban on wearing Islamic veils that cover the face, such as the burqa and niqab, in newly liberated areas of Mosul.
