Over 8,400 Iraqis fled homes in Mosul in 2 days – UN

More than 8,400 people have been displaced from western Mosul over the past two days, UN humanitarian agencies revealed on Thursday.

This has been the highest level displacement in the past week; it was more than twice the number of people who fled between Sunday and Monday, Stéphane Dujarric, the spokesperson of UN secretary-general, noted.

He added that the UN remains concerned for the protection of civilians in ISIS-controlled areas of western Mosul, where more than 100,000 people are believed to remain in Mosul's Old City and northern neighborhoods.

United Nations Human Rights Office said in a statement that reports have revealed there is a significant increase in the number of Iraqi civilians killed by ISIS terrorists while fleeing Mosul.

It also stated that 50-80 people have been killed in an airstrike on al-Zanjili district, located in Mosul's right bank in May 31.

Reliable reports have noted that 231 civilians have been killed while trying to escape from western Mosul since May 26, the statement revealed, adding that at least 204 people have been killed within three days last week only.

Iraqi forces have been battling to liberate western Mosul from the hands of the extremist group, as part of an overall offensive in the northern city which began last October.
