UNHCR Opens a New IDP Camp South of Mosul

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has opened another camp for displaced people in Iraq, as a result of the continuing surge in the number of people fleeing western Mosul.

The UN refugee agency said in a press release on Wednesday, that the organization has opened another camp in Al Salamiyah, south of Mosul. The camp, named Al Salamiyah 2, has already received its first families on Wednesday.

According to the press release, around 2,500 tents have been pitched, but the organization is expected to instal more tents in the coming days, as the camp's full capacity is to shelter 5,000 families or 30,000 people.

The UNHCR head of Mosul office, Hovig Etyemezian, said the camp was opened as fast as possible, due to the "massive outflow of civilians" from both Mosul and other areas near the Iraqi-Syrian border.

Al Salamiyah 2 will be managed by UNHCR’s partner, ACTED, which is also managing the nearby Al Salamiyah 1 camp.

The first Al Salamiyah camp was built with the financial support of the Iraqi Ministry of Migration and Displacement (MoMD) in Nineveh Governate, and the UNHCR and its partners two weeks ago and it's already full.
More than 807,000 people in total have been displaced from the northern Iraqi city of Mosul and its surrounding areas since October last year, according to the latest figures released by the Iraqi government.
