Shiite Hashd al-Shaabi claims retaking three villages near Syrian border

The Hashd al-Shaabi said in a statement that the retaking of the villages would help to cut off ISIS commute between Iraq and neighboring Syria.

EEBIL, Kurdistan Region—Iraqi Shiite forces known as Hashd al-Shaabi said Saturday morning that they have retaken three border villages from ISIS and killing a number of militants among them a high-ranking commander.

The three villages lie west of Baaj and Mosul, the Hashd reported.

The ISIS commander killed, Hassan Kanash, is said to have been in charge of the group’s Inghimasi suicide unit.

The Hashd al-Shaabi said in a statement that the retaking of the villages would help to cut off ISIS commute between Iraq and neighboring Syria.

“It will also strengthen the defense of the border area,” read the statement.

At least 15 ISIS fighters were killed, the Hashd claimed.

In their advance towards the villages, the Shite force called in the help of the Iraqi force to destroy four truck bombs deployed against them by ISIS.
