Deadlock looming over parliament as five drafts of electoral law introduced

Iraqi parliament is heading for a deadlock as there are five drafts for the electoral law introduced to lawmakers, a source told the Baghdad Post on Thursday.

The problem lies in the many drafts introduced to lawmakers for debate, he added, noting that there are two drafts introduced by the presidency and the prime minister's office.

Also, some political trends have come forward with other proposals which they want to be included in the final draft of the electoral law.

The draft submitted by presidency to the parliament preceded all the other drafts, but it was ditched because it gives blocs of small representation under the dome the upper hand over the major blocs, the source revealed.

He also indicated that the parliament's legal affairs committee sent letter to the speaker of the parliament to determine which draft that will be adopted from among the five drafts.

A meeting between the leaders of the blocs represented under the dome may held, or could they put the five drafts to vote for only one of them to be picked, he concluded.
