(Baghdad: Al-Furat News) The Ministry of the Interior agreed to open a new "joint" border crossing between Iraq and Iran for commercial exchange.

"The Iraqi Interior Ministry has agreed to reopen the common border in the town of Dahlran," said Hussein Ali Mousavi, governor of the town of Dahlran in southwestern Iran, in a press statement, announcing the launch of trade between Iran and Iraq across the Cheelat border.

"This step is important in the context of the development objectives of the border areas," the official said.

"The town of Dahlran extends 220 kilometers from the Iran-Iraq border," he said, calling for "the employment of border opportunities in Dahlan in favor of the desired economic goals and securing jobs in this Iranian town."

The commercial attache at the Iraqi embassy in Tehran, Shaker Razak, announced on April 28 that Iran was the third exporter of goods to Iraq.

"China ranks first in terms of exports to Iraq and Turkey is second," Razak said, noting that "Iran ranked third in terms of exports to Iraq in 2016."

"The value of Turkish exports to Iraq last year amounted to 20 billion dollars, while Iranian exports reached 5 billion dollars," he said
