Confusion about who rejected an alleged candidate for defense minister

Baghdad, Oct. 24 (AKnews) - Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki or somebody close to him rejected Itab al-Dawri as candidate for the defense ministry after she allegedly had been nominated by Iraqiya List.

According to Abdul Hussein Hamid al-Jabiri, adviser in the Iraqi government, Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki officially informed Iraqiya List that he rejected Dawri.

However, somebody, who is close to Iraqiya List's leader Ayad Allawi, said that only members of parliament who allegedly are close to Maliki, delivered a letter about the rejection to Iraqiya leader Ayad Allawi.

There is even more confusion about who nominated Dawri. A number of Iraqi women in the parliament called on Maliki earlier this month to assign Dawri as defense minister. Dawri claimed that she had been nominated by Iraqiya List.

The source close to Allawi, however, said that "Iraqiya did not nominate Dawri officially for the post, and the government's response came as a result of her remarks."

The lack of ministers of defense, security and interior are consequences of the Erbil Agreement that ended an eight-months deadlock after the last elections in March 2010. It basically says that Maliki may remain Prime Minister but Allawi, who won the election, would head the new National Council for Strategic Policies (NCSP). Also, the three important security ministries -- Security, Defense, Interior -- would be split between the parties.

Today, with the NCSP still not created and the three ministries still run by Prime Minister Maliki himself, parties criticize Maliki of violating the Erbil Agreement.
