ERBIL — The establishment of a Kurdish sovereign state is in favour of the United States said William Banks, Director at the Institute for National Security and Counterterrorism (INSCT) at Syracuse University in the US.

Banks said, in an interview with the Kurdish Gulan newspaper, that the former US Vice President Joe Biden's project for dividing Iraq had taken into account the regional distinctiveness of Iraq .

In 2004, Biden laid a project for dividing Iraq into three federal states based on ethnicity and sectarian orientation which was firmly rejected by the Iraqi authorities and welcomed by the Kurdistan Region.

The INSCT director supports the Kurdish independence from Iraq , stressing that a Kurdish sovereign state will serve the US interests in the Middle East
