Baghdad/ Iraq TradeLink:

More than 200 women activists, academicians, media personnel and intellectuals held the first-time meeting to discuss the role of the Iraqi women in the protests going on in the country.

The first women's meetings were started by the communists in 1950s to be followed by the Baath Party, which ended in 2003.

Since then, no women's conferences were held to discuss social and political problems.

The first priority of the conference concentrated on the activating the role of women in the protest movement, in a mover to "break the fear barrier" in the Iraqi society, following women's participation in the weekly demonstrations all over the country.

"Iraqi women are demanding reforms and rights", the conferees confirmed.
