The independent Iraqi news agency / listen .... The World Bank said that developing countries appear to have achieved the goal of the United Nations to reduce extreme poverty in the poorest countries in the world by the year 2015 by half.

The bank, based in Washington that preliminary data show that developing countries as a group achieved the goal in 2010 is the first goal of the eight development goals set by the United Nations Millennium.

The MDGs set of goals adopted by world leaders at the United Nations in 2000 to combat poverty, hunger and disease in poor countries.

Said Martin Ravallion, Director of the Bank's research department, which oversaw the preparation of the report, "We are confident now that the developing world as a whole has achieved the objectives of the first millennium and reached this target in 2010 despite the crisis."

However, the division on the basis of areas shows that the only areas of eastern Europe and the Middle East and East Asia and the Pacific, including India and China have achieved the goal of reducing poverty. While the World Bank said that Africa and Latin America have not yet realized goal.

The Bank estimates that the current rate there will still be about one billion people living in extreme poverty and who are internationally defined as people living on less than $ 1.25 a day.

The data show the new World Bank compiled a survey of 850 families in 130 to a developing country that the proportion of people living in extreme poverty was the lowest since 1981, when the bank began monitoring levels of poverty.

The Bank believes that about 1.29 billion people were living on less than $ 1.25 a day in between 10 and 20 of the poorest countries in the world in 2008 down from 1.94 billion in 1981.

Ravallion and said, "This is the first time where we see a decrease in the number of poor in all six regions, including sub-Saharan Africa."

However, developing countries have achieved less progress on reducing the number of people living on between $ 1.25 and two dollars a day. The World Bank estimates show that 1.8 billion people were living on little more than $ 1.25 per day in 2008 and that such an increase for the number that reached 648 million people in 1981.
