STOCKHOLM – The Swedish Transport Agency (Transportstyrelsen) has banned Iraqi Airways, with immediate effect, from flying its routes into and out of Sweden.

Spokesperson Simon Posluk told local media, “The Transport Agency’s decision to recall the traffic permit is based on EASA’s [European Aviation Safety Agency] assessment.

“An airline that is not considered to meet these requirements is no longer allowed to fly to and from Sweden.”

The ban will affect those who have tickets for journeys on the route, which carried 18,329 passengers in 2014.

“A very troubling situation of course arises for those people who have both booked tickets and counted on flying home with the company.

“You have to have complete sympathy for that, but at the same time you need to respect that the company does not meet safety requirements to fly to and from EU countries.”
