CPJ Urges Turkey to Restore Access to Kurdish Websites

ANKARA – BasNews is one of eight websites blocked within Turkey by the government since it resumed bombing Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) positions in areas of Iraqi Kurdistan.

Although the draconian measures are common within Turkey, with access to Twitter and other social media often suspended in the wake of protests, the Committee to Protect Journalists is calling for access to be restored.

The telecoms regulator in Turkey, TİB, can be ordered by the government to restrict access to websites. The regulator then must apply to the court with 24 hours to continue the digital blockade, and the court must rule within a further 48 hours.

In a statement CPJ Europe and Central Asia Program Coordinator Nina Ognianova said, “We call on Turkish authorities to immediately restore access to all news websites and to stop trying to limit the flow of information.

“At this critical juncture for Turkey, its citizens, neighbours, and partners should all have access to every possible source of information and opinion.”

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is regularly criticised for his Orwellian approach to regulating the media, and a recent blockade of Twitter, after photos and video of the Suruç bombing were being circulated online, was justified by the government because it “removed malicious content, including hate speech, in line with the court order”.
