KDPI Peshmerga in Keleshin close to Iranian borde

Kurdish Official Gives Details of Clashes Between PKK & KDPI
KDPI releases two PKK guerrillas after announcement of ceasefire

    Basnews | Hoshmand Sadiq views 26.05.2015 13:40

    KELESHIN

A ceasefire has been declared following Sunday morning’s clashes between the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI) in the Keleshin area close to the border between the KRG and Iranian Kurdistan. Two PKK prisoners, detained during the incident, have been freed. One KDPI Peshmerga was killed and three more injured in the clashes.

Sadiq Darwieshi, a KDPI politburo official from Keleshin, told BasNews on Tuesday how the clashes began and what occurred during the preceding hours of Sunday May 24th.

“We never wanted to fight our brothers. On the day the clashes happened, the PKK shot at us after surrounding our Peshmerga. It resulted in one of our Peshmerga being killed and three more wounded,” said Darwieshi.

He said the clashes then intensified and they detained two PKK guerrillas.

“If we wanted to fight against the PKK, we could have killed those two PKK guerrillas straightaway,” added Darwieshi.

“We told the two PKK guerrillas that what they’d done was wrong. They apologised to us and we freed them, showing that we didn’t want to fight, even though they killed one of our Peshmerga,” revealed the senior KDPI official.

Darwieshi said their forces are still in the Keleshin area and they don’t have any plans to leave, as the PKK have demanded.

“We won’t leave and we won’t attack anybody. However if they attack us, we will respond forcefully,” warned Darwieshi.

The Kurdish official noted they felt there was a long-standing plan to attack their Peshmerga in the area.

“Before the PKK attack, we saw the Iranian army sending weapons and soldiers to the border,” he said.

Darwieshi also claimed that after the clashes Iran sent reinforcements to the area in a helicopter.

KDP and PUK has ruled KRG since 1991

Referendum Discussions Brings KDP and PUK Closer
    Barzani reveals steps towards independence

    Basnews | Hemin Salih views 26.05.2015 12:36

    ERBIL

The Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani has revealed plans to declare an independent state of Kurdistan, a dream Kurds have been harbouring for centuries. Two referendums are expected to take place in the region in the near future.

On his return from a weeklong trip to the US and EU countries, President Barzani met with Kurdish political parties last week and reported on the results of his tour. He emphasised that the case of Kurdish independence now has an international profile.

He stated that Kurdistan Region domestic relations are key to success. “I believe that Kurdish parties are aware enough to fulfil their national responsibilities in this matter.”

Barzani said, “We must work for our goal through a legal procedure within Iraqi constitutional law; we need a referendum on whether there should be an independent state of Kurdistan.”

BasNews understands that the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) is working on a plan to carry out referendum on the cases of Kurdish independence and the future of the disputed Kurdish areas in northern Iraq. It will be decided whether the areas, defined by Article 140 of the Iraqi Constitution, will stay under the jurisdiction of the Iraqi Federal Government or come under the control of the KRG.

The Change Movement, known locally as Gorran, and the two Islamic parties in the Kurdistan Region have warned that organising a referendum will be a complicated task in the current situation, and finalising the Kurdistan Region constitution is currently more important.

However, the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) are insisting on the plan, as they believe that the time is right.

A source from the PUK, speaking on condition of anonymity, told BasNews that discussing independence has brought the KDP and PUK closer. The KRG Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani, a senior PUK official, is supporting the strategic agreement between the two major parties.

“Talabai believes that a healthy relationship between the KDP and PUK is vital for the Kurdistan region”, added the BasNews source.

“Prior to President Barzani’s trip to the US and upon the request of Qubad Talabani, PUK Secretary General Jalal Talabani has ordered his party to improve its relations with KDP.”

The source also revealed, “The improvement in PUK-KDP relations is also related to Iranian government policy. Iran hopes to be the first country to recognise an independent Kurdistan.”

He explained that the Iranian government understands that Iraq has practically been divided between Shi’ite, Sunni and Kurds. So they hope to at least ally with the Shi’ites and Kurds while the Sunnis share no borders with Iran.

Mustafa Chawrash, a senior PUK official, told BasNews, “In the current situation in which the Iraqi federal Government has failed to send the Kurdistan Region’s share of the budget for over a year, Kurds may consider other options as we cannot live within Iraq any longer.”

Iraqi forces getting ready for Anbar operation

    Iraqi Army Announces Anbar Operation
Large part of western Iraqi province under the control IS militants since early 2014

    Basnews views 26.05.2015 11:53

    BAGHDAD

The Iraqi government on Tuesday announced the launch of a military operation to drive Islamic State (IS) out of Anbar. The extremists captured Ramadi, the capital of the western Iraqi province, last week.

Iraqi state TV announced the start of the operation, in which troops will be backed by Shi’ite and Sunni paramilitary forces, but did not provide further details.

IS militants seized large parts of Anbar in early 2014 and eventually captured Ramadi 17th May.

The fall of the city marked a significant defeat for Iraqi forces, which had been making steady progress against the insurgents over the past year, backed by US-led international coalition airstrikes.

Security forces and Sunni militiamen who had been battling the extremists in Ramadi for months, collapsed as IS militants overran the city mid-May.

The capture of Ramadi has created tension between the US and Iraqi governments, after US Defence Secretary Ashton Carter said that Iraqi forces had “vastly outnumbered” the IS militants in Ramadi but “showed no will to fight.”

After the fall of Ramadi, Iraqi PM Haider al-Abadi called on Shi’ite militias under the Hashd al-Shaabi command to help Iraqi troops retake the majority Sunni province.
