Ramadi refugees waiting on a bridge to enter Baghdad

UN: 40,000 Civilians Flee Anbar Fighting
Baghdad authorities prevent refugees entering capital

    BAGHDAD

The United Nations says it is trying to reach some 40,000 civilians displaced from Ramadi by the advance of Islamic State (IS).

The largest concentration is at Bzebiz Bridge, which has been closed by authorities to prevent those fleeing from entering Iraq’s capital, Baghdad.

IS seized Ramadi earlier this week and pro-government militias are preparing an offensive to retake the city.

IS militants are reported to be pressing eastwards from Ramadi – capital of Anbar province – down the Euphrates Valley towards Habbaniya where the Shi’ite militias have been deployed.

The new UN figures come amid reports that Iraqi forces retook territory from IS to the east of Ramadi on Saturday.

Ramadi, Anbar’s provincial capital, fell a week ago.

Iraqi Security officials said an operation was launched early Saturday to retake Husaybah, a town seven kilometres east of Ramadi in the Euphrates Valley, that IS had seized earlier in the week.

“The Husaybah area is now under out full control and forces are now advancing to liberate neighbouring Jweibah,” a police colonel told AFP from the front.

The future of Kirkuk still up in the air

    PUK Suggests Autonomy for Kirkuk
PUK officials discuss Kirkuk plan with Turkish and Iranian officials

    Basnews | Hemin Salih views 23.05.2015 11:48

    KIRKUK

Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) officials are attempting to create a Kirkuk autonomous region with the help of a Turkish diplomat.

A source told BasNews that autonomy would give balance to the competition between the PUK and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).

The matter was discussed during the recent visit of Second Deputy Secretary General of the PUK Barham Salih to Iran.

“Since the start of the Islamic State (IS) conflict in Iraq, the Iranian government has been insisting Kirkuk become an autonomous region as most of the areas disputed between Erbil and Baghdad are fully controlled by the Kurdish Peshmerga.”

The source continued, “The Governor of Kirkuk is working on the case through Mohammed Saed Potsal, a Turkish diplomat who had previously been the Head of the Department of Middle East in Turkish Foreign Ministry.

“The Turkish government is not supporting the case anymore as it has economic interests with the Kurdistan Region, mostly through its oil industry.”

PUK official in Kirkuk Rebwar Taha rejected the claims and told BasNews, “We oppose the declaration of autonomy in Kirkuk as we are working to bring the province under the jurisdiction of Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).”

He added, “The people of Kirkuk want to decide on their future through the implementation of article 140 of Iraqi constitution.”

The Status of Kirkuk the northern Iraqi city have been a controversial point since the collapse of former Iraqi regime in 2003, with Kurds wanting to attach the city to Kurdistan Region and Iraqi central government wanting the city to remain under Baghdad authorities.
