ERBIL, Dec. 28 (AKnews) – The Kurdistan Democratic party (KDP) led by President of Kurdistan Region Massoud Barzani will take over premiership of the Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) in the next couple of weeks as part of a political deal with the allies patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) who have been heading the government over the past two year.

Pshtiwan Sadeq, member of the KDP’s Leadership Council, told AKnews on Wednesday that “The KDP is ready to take over government premiership. The final decision has been made and our candidate for the position is Nechirvan Barzani who will take over the position in the next 15 days”

Back six years ago, the KDP and the PUK entered regional parliamentary elections together under what they term as “Strategic Deal”. According to the deal, each of the KDP and the PUK would head the government for two years.

However, the KDP then took the two half terms to complete a full term of four years. The PUK were hoping they could head the government for four years as well when they won the second term together with the KDP. But now the KDP claim their half term.

Having worked as KRG Prime Minister during the previous term, Nechirvan Barzani is seen as one of the strongest politicians in the region.

Current Prime Minister Barham Ahmed Salih has on several occasions said that he is ready to give up his position if his party leaders agree with the KDP on that.

But he also has said that he “will have a say on that”
