SLC MP describes demands of demonstrators as "minority's demands"
    Saturday, 12 January 2013 12:49 | | |

Baghdad (AIN) -MP Ali al-Shalah of the State of Law Coalition described those demands to cancel the Accountability & Justice Law and the article 4 of the Anti-Terrorism Law as "demands of the minority".

Shalah told All Iraq News Agency (AIN) "The majority of the Iraqi people support the democracy and constitution; also they support the application of the execution's provisions against the murderers and criminals."

He added that "The ratification of the general amnesty law and cancelation of the ablation of Baath elements can encourage larger demonstrations of more credibility from Baghdad to Basra as there are hundreds of terrorism's victims."

Earlier, the ministerial commission that was formed to receive the demonstrators' demands decided to take measures to address some files including the demand of canceling the A & J Law and the release of the prisoners and detainees.

PUK Congress Set for June, With Leadership Question on the Agenda

    12/01/2013 06:04:00By NAWZAD MAHMOOD

SULAIMANI, Kurdistan Region – With its leader Iraqi President Jalal Talabani recuperating in Germany from a serious stroke, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) is preparing for an extraordinary congress in June, where all eyes are on the question of succession, officials say.

There was no talk of a congress before Talabani’s stroke in mid-December, but since then it has become a topic of debate within the party, which has been rudderless since the veteran leader fell ill and was flown to Germany.

Harem Kemal Agha, a member of the PUK's leadership council, told Rudaw that the congress was scheduled for June 1, and another PUK official speaking on condition of anonymity said that “electing a leader” was among the key agenda items.

Agha said there were no obstacles to the congress being held on time. "The bylaws have set the date for holding the congress and it will be held on time.”

"It is true that Talabani’s illness is an issue for us, but this will be dealt with according to our party bylaws,” said Arez Abdullah, leadership member of the PUK.

He expressed hope that Talabani could recuperate and return to attend, but added that, “No doubt, the PUK is able to hold the congress without the presence of its leader."

"Those who think that the PUK will end without Talabani are betting on a lost cause," he added.

Talabani’s leadership has been the cohesive factor for its members, and there are worries that his absence could rekindle rivalries among the different PUK factions.

There are already consenting and dissenting voices over the need for a party congress, or electing a new leader.

“The PUK does not need to hold an extraordinary congress for choosing a successor for its general secretary, because the bylaws have designated two deputies for that post," said Fareed Asasard, leadership member of the PUK.

But PUK bylaws state that whenever the general secretary is unable to carry out his duties, regardless of the reasons, an extraordinary congress needs to be held within two months.

"If a replacement for Talabani is selected, he will not be called the new general secretary, but the acting secretary. In the fourth congress a new PUK structure and leadership will be elected,” Asasard said.

Since Talabani’s December 17 stroke at his Baghdad home, his supporters have continuously reported that his condition is improving.

According to Agha, the most pressing issue for the congress is "the presence of Talabani." He added that, "Talabani was present in all the past congresses, but a congress can be held even without his presence."

Talabani, who has led the PUK since its founding in 1975, has been such a towering figure of the Kurdish struggle that there are concerns over the party’s very survival if he fails to recuperate. The PUK and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) are ruling partners in the autonomous Kurdistan Regional Government.
