ERBIL, June 27 (AKnews)- Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki called for early elections today as a means to break through the current political impasse in the country.

In a statement issued by his office, Maliki said while the other parties refuse to gather for talks and insist on "creating successive crises… we see ourselves obliged to call for early elections where the nation has the final word."

At the same time, the PM renews calls for negotiations "on the basis of to constitution" while he promises to carry out reform in all the governmental agencies and the three senior authorizes in the country.

By virtue of article 62 of the Iraqi constitution, the House of Representatives can be dissolved either with a majority vote or with the vote of one-third of its MPs or upon a request by the PM, approved by the president.

However, the House cannot be dissolved while interrogating the PM. Despite this, Maliki's call for early elections comes amid the efforts of major blocs for interrogating the PM over "constitutional violations."
