Lack of monitoring over Iraqi Kurdistan govt responsible for crises: speaker

SULAIMANI, Iraq’s Kurdistan region,—

Iraqi Kurdistan Parliament Speaker Yusuf Mohammed Sadiq said a lack of monitoring over the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) was responsible for the crises facing the Kurdistan Region.

Sadiq, along with the parliament’s secretary and a number of lawmakers, visited the politburo of the Kurdistan Islamic Movement on Sunday and met with members of the party and Irfan Abdulaziz, the party’s leader.

“The deactivation of parliament has ruined the reputation of the Kurdistan Region in front of the international community,” Abdulaziz said in a statement provided to NRT.

Sadiq said all political parties should play a role in bringing the crises in the Kurdistan Region to an end.

“The lack of observation of parliament over the work of the KRG has brought this bad situation to the people,” Sadiq noted. “All parties should responsibly have their voice and get past this difficult political and economic phase in the lives of the people.”

The crisis erupted after Massoud Barzani, whose term as Kurdistan President ended on August 20, 2015 but refused to step down and remains unofficially in office. According to the law, Barzani cannot run for presidency anymore. Sadiq said last year “extending Barzani term is against the laws.”

That main political parties have failed to reach an agreement on the Kurdistan presidency as KDP insists that Massoud Barzani should remain president of the region.

Kurdistan Parliament’s Speaker was prevented from entering Erbil city in October 2015 and since then the Kurdish parliament has been in recess. Kurdistan PM Nechirvan Barzani has removed four members of his cabinet from the Gorran Movement and replaced them with KDP politicians.
