Barzani, Abadi, Biden discuss Mosul operation

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – The Kurdistan Region President, US Vice President, and the Iraqi Prime Minister discuss Mosul operation in separate phone calls.

On Wednesday, Joseph Biden the US VP contacted Masoud Barzani, the Kurdistan Region President and discussed the situation in both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region and the forthcoming operation to liberate Mosul.

According to a statement by the Kurdistan Region Presidency (KRP), President Barzani and VP Biden talked about the war against the Islamic State (IS) and the preparations for the offensive to retake Mosul.

They reportedly emphasized the continuous coordination between the Kurdistan Region Peshmerga forces, the US troops, and the Iraqi forces.

The White House released a statement on the phone call between President Barzani and VP Biden, stating that “The leaders underscored the urgency of sustained progress in the fight against IS, Iraq's economic recovery, humanitarian assistance for displaced Iraqis, and cooperation to liberate Mosul.”

“Vice President thanked President Barzani for his leadership and Kurdish commitment in the fight against ISIL, ” and encouraged “close coordination between the Government of Iraq and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG),” the statement read.

On another phone call between President Barzani and the Iraqi PM Haider al-Abadi, both sides stressed the “continuation of relations, coordination, and consultation” for Mosul offensive and to resolve the stranded issues between Erbil and Baghdad.

President Barzani said he was optimist about future dialogues to improve relationships with Iraq.
