HEWLÊR-Erbil, Kurdistan region ‘Iraq’,— A tourism company in Saudi Arabia owes Iraq’s Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Ministry of Endowment and Religious Affairs $1.9 million USD for pilgrim transportation transactions, Mariwan Naqshbandi the ministry’s spokesperson said on Wednesday.

Naqshbandi told NRT a Saudi court has ordered Gulf Lama Travel and Tourism to pay back $460,000 USD to the Ministry of Endowment and Religious Affairs but the ministry has yet to receive $1.854 million USD.

Gulf Lama Travel and Tourism received $1.9 million from the KRG’s Ministry of Endowment and Religious Affairs in 2011 to handle the management of pilgrims to Mecca, Naqshbandi said, adding the airport seized the money.

The KRG’s ministry has paid a lawyer with expertise in handling similar disputes $50,000 in order to claim the other $1.854 million from jurisdiction in a Saudi court, according to Naqshbandi.

Gulf Lama Travel and Tourism is a member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which organizes trips and provides tourist services.
