ERBIL-Hewler, Kurdistan region ‘Iraq’,— A senior member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) in Iraqi Kurdistan on Tuesday urged for the region’s five major political parties to return to negotiations, without preconditions. KDP politburo secretary Fazil Mirani said crises facing the Kurdistan Region should be handled responsibly, as a weeks-long dispute among parties has paralyzed institutions, including the Kurdistan Parliament. “The KDP always tries to maintain the unity of Kurds,” Mirani said. “KDP believes the issues will be tackled with dialogue and understanding.” “The meetings should also resume because the KDP always considers the Kurdistan Region’s interests above everything else,” he further stated. Mirani also urged KDP and Change Movement (Gorran) affiliated media outlets to end their quarrel, in order to deescalate the situation. The crisis erupted after KD leader Massoud Barzani, whose term as Kurdistan President ended on August 20, 2015 but refused to step down, and continues to function as leader. Tensions between two of the region’s main parties reached a high on Oct. 12 when KDP-allied security forces prevented Parliament Speaker Yusuf Mohammad and his convoy from entering the capital of the Kurdistan Region, Erbil. KDP representatives the previous day had informed Gorran ministers not to report to work after protests turned violent in eastern cities and towns. Kurdistan Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani has removed four members of his cabinet from the Change (Gorran) Gorran Movement on October 13, 2015. Senior officials of the KDP have accused Gorran of orchestrating attacks on its party headquarters during demonstrations that turned violent in October.
