Baghdad to Investigate KRG-Israel Oil Trading
BAGHDAD – The Iraqi Oil Ministry has announced it will investigate oil trading between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and Israel.
Spokesperson for the ministry Asim Jihad suggested that the Iraqi central government follow the KRG’s oil shipments using GPS, as there are suspicions of deals with Israel.
Asim pointed out that countries listed by Baghdad as “Enemy States” cannot enjoy the benefits of an economic relationship with Iraq.
The reaction comes after a report by the Financial Times on 23rd August, revealing that Israel has become a major purchaser of oil from the Kurdistan Region, buying as much as 19 million barrels since May 2015.
However, member of the Parliamentary Committee for Oil and Gas Jamal Ahmad told Azzaman newspaper that there is no direct oil trading between KRG and Israel. “Israel has purchased KRG oil indirectly through oil companies and brokers.”
