EU to Open Representation Office in Erbil

Having finalized the necessary documentation with the Federal Foreign Ministry of Iraq and the KRG Department of Foreign Relations, the European Union will soon open an EU Delegation Liaison Office in Erbil to support the current activities of the EU in coordination with the Kurdistan Regional Government, the United Nations and NGOs.

Minister Falah Mustafa, Head of the KRG Foreign Relations, stated, “The KRG welcomes the decision of the EU to open an EU delegation office in Erbil. We thank the EU for responding positively to the need of opening an office in the Kurdistan Region.”

“The EU and its 28 member states play an important role in dealing with the political, economic and security challenges facing the world. We would like to see increased engagement from the EU to support the institutions of the Kurdistan Regional government during this challenging time,” the Minister added.

The Minister also expressed the readiness of the Department of Foreign Relations to fully support the EU mission in Kurdistan Region and to facilitate further cooperation between the KRG and the EU.

The Kurdistan Regional Government pursues an open door policy in reaching out to the international community. Currently, 33 countries have their representation offices in Erbil including the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council.
