(CNN)Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi slashed his Cabinet by one-third on Sunday as part of a broader reform effort. According to a statement from his office, the number of members was cut to 22 from 33, effective immediately. Among the ministries that were eliminated were the ministries of women's affairs and human rights. The Prime Minister also ordered four ministries to merge, the statement said. The announcement comes less than one week after the Iraqi parliament unanimously approved a reform package that eliminated some senior government posts, among other things. The reforms were proposed by al-Abadi in response to a widespread wave of protests against corruption and government mismanagement including bad basic services. "Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi has this evening announced a radical reform of the Iraqi Government," British Ambassador Frank Baker said Sunday. "We await further details and hope that all parties come together for the good of the Iraqi people." CNN's Jomana Karadsheh and Dana Ford contributed to this report.
