Bashar al-Assad meeting with Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah...

Source: Iran Has Given $6 Billion to Syrian Regime
Tehran wants to control the infrastructure of Syria in return for supporting Assad

    Basnews views 23.05.2015 15:01

    ERBIL

Diplomatic sources have claimed that since the beginning of Syrian conflict in early 2011, the Iranian government has funded the Syrian regime to the tune of $6 billion.

According to information obtained exclusively by BasNews, Iran is now demanding control of important sectors and industry in Syria in return for their strong backing of the Assad regime.

“Iran is demanding concessions from the Syrian government in terms of oil, infrastructure and agriculture to cover the value of its credit and support of the Syrian regime,” said a diplomatic source, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the subject.

“To date Iran has provided $6 billion in funding and this will increase as the conflict continues,” added the BasNews source.

BasNews has learned that Bashar Assad’s regime has been forced to concede to Iranian demands to maintain its position.

“This has given Iran significant control over Syrian government assets. The Syrian Regime is unlikely to be able to repay its debts for as long as the conflict continues,” reveals the diplomatic source.

According to UN estimates some 12.2 million people, including 5.6 million children, need humanitarian assistance throughout Syria. And by conservative estimates, more than 220,000 Syrians have died in the conflict, although that number is likely much higher.

Furthermore, the UN believes 6.5 million people have been displaced in Syria, and more than 3 million refugees have fled the country.
