    “EVICT MALIKI” COUNTDOWN : 12 DAYS TO THE SCHEDULED* ELECTION

    * NOTE: that the countdown notice has been amended to qualify the Election as ”Scheduled ” to give emphasis to the tenuous state of political / constitutional affairs in Iraq in recent days and specifically the mention in the news of a possible delay in the election due to the Anbar diaspora. Add to the foregoing the ” threat” of the election occurring under martial law with Maliki as the chief executive officer.

    Principal Contestants for Election in a Nutshell : A compilation / summary of two articles ; (1) Electoral race heats up among Iraq'SSunni factions

    by Harith Hasan ,

    ARTICLE LINK

    AND...

    IHEC Publishes the List of Candidates for Iraq’s 30 April Parliamentary Elections by Reidar Visser ,

    ARTICLE LINK

    Starting with the Shiite Islamists lists ;

    1. there is the State of Law list of Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki ;

    2. ISCI ( Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq ) -dominated Muwatin ( Often referred to as the Citizen bloc, it's Parliamentary wing, led by Ammar Hakim , Ahmed Chalabi is a member ) ; the Sadrist ( of which the outspoken Arhar bloc is a part of ), now allied strategically with Hakim

    3. Fadila and the Jaafari splinter group from the Daawa .

    4. Sunni : Five main coalitions will compete to win Sunni votes. . Three of these five coalitions, in fact, represent fragments of the

    5. Iraqiya List, which is no longer present in the elections.

    6. The Mutahidoun bloc, often referred to as the " United ", led by parliament Speaker Osama al-Nujaifi, is the first of these coalitions.

    7. The second coalition is the Arabiya led by Deputy Prime Minister Saleh al-Mutlaq.

    8. Third, there is the Nationalist Coalition, also called Wataniyya , led by Ayad Allawi, the former prime minister who was the leader of the Iraqiya List. ( Received a slight plurality of the electorate in 2008 ).

    These coalitions will compete with each other and with two new groups that have emerged on the

    Sunni electoral scene:

    1. The first group, the Karama (Dignity) List, was formed by the prominent Sunni businessman Khamis Khanjar.

    2. The fifth main group is the Coalition of Iraq, which was formed by another businessman, Fadel al-Dabbas.

    For the Kurdish lists, one of the most prominent aspects is the absence of a unified list in most areas, including in so-called disputed territories where they have historically put in much effort to remain united. The continuing power struggle and impasse in the internal KRG government formation process following elections last years may well be part of the explanation. ( There are three Kurdish blocs, PUK, KDP and Gorran, sometimes called MDC )
