Iraq unlikely to remove zeros from the currency 15.1.2014

    January 15, 2014

BAGHDAD,— A rumor circulating regarding the removal of zeros from the Iraqi Dinar (ID) is false. Najiba Najib, a member of parliament (MP) from Iraq’s finance committee, recently clarified that there is no such plan in the Iraqi Parliament.

An economic expert believes that the zeros will not be removed from the Iraqi currency because the Iraqi budget is highly dependent on oil revenue.

“There is no draft law in parliament about removing zeros from the Iraqi currency,” Najib said.

She acknowledged that, “The central bank made a request to remove the zeros, but our committee refuses such requests because they are not in the interest of Iraq’s market and also, it is hard to control currency exchange - serious work needs to be done for this.”

Najib further explained that the reason the removal of zeros from the Iraqi currency has been delayed is due to the difficulty of controlling the currency during the crisis Iraq is currently experiencing regarding the exchange of 35 trillion ID in the bazaar. The federal government does not trust the central bank to be capable of carrying out this process successfully.

Another MP from the finance committee, Abdul-Hussein Yassri, said that removing zeros from the ID will increase the value of the currency.

In recent years, there was a draft law prepared by the previous head of the central bank for ID to be written in both Arabic and Kurdish languages, as well as using other signs representative of minorities in Iraq. But due to disagreement with the federal government, the draft law was rejected.

Many economic analysts believe that reform in Iraq’s economy is not related to the removal of zeros from the Iraqi currency because what is happening in Iraq now is related to inflation, not zeros.

“Zeros will not be removed from the currency because the budget of Iraq is highly dependent on oil revenue” Ismael Shukur, an economic expert and university lecturer told Basnews.

Shukur noted that, “95% of the Iraqi budget comes from oil revenue, and the oil is sold in US Dollars (USD) and then gets exchanged to ID. Thus, if we remove zeros, there will be a resultant increase in deficit.”

Dr. Khalid Haidar, Economic Expert at Sulêmanî [Sulaimaniyah] University, emphasized that the economy of Iraq is not productive, and therefore, if the removal of zeros from ID takes place,www.Ekurd.net Iraq’s economy will be in a risky position and people will no longer value Iraq’s currency and will use USD instead. Dr. Haidar said such a move is not in the interest of Iraq nor the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

The first Iraqi currency was released in 1932. It has been changed often, the last time being in 2003 when the dictatorship regime came to end and Saddam Hussein was removed from power.

PYD leader: Kurds will not attend Geneva II unless Kurdish question is on agenda 15.1.2014

Salih Muslim co-president of the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD), the biggest Kurdish party in western Kurdistan (north and northeastern Syria), attends a conference, Paris, France, Nov. 13, 2013.

PARIS,— Syrian Kurdish PYD party co-chair Salih Muslim has stated at a press conference in Paris that the Kurds will not participate in the Geneva II Conference unless they are represented and the resolution of the Kurdish question is on the agenda. Muslim added that a meeting that did not address the Kurdish question would be like a second Lausanne.

At the press conference entitled 'The situation in Rojava and Syria prior to Geneva', Muslim answered questions put to him by ANF, saying: "We will take part if the settling of the Kurdish question is to be discussed."

Muslim said that Syrian Kurdistan [Rojava] was the heart of the struggle, adding: "the struggle has been continuing for 3 years. In July certain things became clear."

Muslim continued: "We have realised that there are forces like the Salafists who want to take the revolution in a different direction. Muslim continued: "the revolution began on 19 July. We encountered a Salafist attack supported by Turkey. This continued from July 2012 until July 2013. We decided to establish a new civilian administration in the Kurdish areas for democratic self-government. Two months ago a meeting was held attended by 82 people, with representatives of the Arabs, Kurds and Assyrians. Two committees were established, one for a constitutional project and one for elections."

‘Our aim is to produce a democratic solution for the whole of Syria'

Muslim said that a few days ago agreement had been reached regarding the administration and form of election to be held in the areas in Rojava, adding that their aim was to develop a democratic project for Syria.

Muslim said: "The existing opposition does not represent the will of all peoples in Syria. Another problem is the representation of the Kurds. It will not be right if this is not discussed at Geneva." He added that the project in Rojava was also a proposal to the Geneva II Conference.

Muslim said they had spoken to the US and the Russians and told them that in order for there to be democracy in Syria the Kurdish question needed to be resolved.

Muslim added that the organising committee for the conference was at present ignoring the Kurds,www.Ekurd.net adding: "The Geneva Conference will be a mere show and not solve anything as far as we are concerned."

Muslim added that they had explained at all their meetings that the Syrian opposition did not represent the Kurds or the Syrian people, adding that the Kurds would not participate at Geneva II. He said: "It will only be for show. We want a resolution of the Kurdish question to be addressed. Otherwise we won't attend. All the Kurds agree with this position."

Muslim added that they had been advised by everyone they had spoken to, first and foremost the Russians, "Don't bring up the Kurdish question now. Leave it for other meetings." Muslim concluded: "We Kurds do not want a repetition of Lausanne."
