A strong blow to al Qaeda in Iraq
    09-08-2013 | (Voice of Iraq)

Source: The New York Times ğU.S.

Escape from prison is common in Iraq, but the attacks on the prisons of Abu Ghraib and Taji recently, are a special class. These attacks led to the flight of up to 800 armed, looking for them, "Interpol" Now as a "major threat" to global security. The attacks also showed alarming and growing strength of al Qaeda in Iraq.

Which appeared in a state of decline since just a few years, also raised new questions about the effectiveness of Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, and about the stability of Iraq itself. And al-Qaeda in Iraq, affiliated to al-Qaeda, had been waging a deadly insurgency took the country to the brink of civil war during 2006 and 2007, and then suffered major defeats at the hands of Iraqi tribal groups and American troops. Has rebounded since then, and is believed to be largely responsible for increasing the daily bombings that killed nearly 700 people in the month of July alone.

The processes of Abu Ghraib and Taji were simultaneous and Mttortin, Western experts said the newspaper "New York Times" The insurgents used mortars to prosecute Iraqi forces, and sent suicide bombers to penetrate the defenses of these forces, and inflicted so strongly attacked for the release of prisoners. And strangely, the officials in the U.S. administration after spending this amount of money to strengthen the Iraqi security forces, talked a bit, in secret and in public, for the reason that called for the failure of their investment, in that case, this limit is stunning.

And Iraq a sovereign state and is responsible for its own security, but he could be more able to fend off al-Qaeda, if the work of al-Maliki and the Americans more effort to reach an agreement to keep the symbolic number of soldiers in the country, to continue to assist in training and intelligence gathering. It is therefore not surprising to be interesting Maliki such a procedure has increased.

The Army Special Forces and the CIA, reportedly, has a small number of units in the country to assist in counter-terrorism activities. And regional fluctuations, including the Syrian war, doubled from instability in Iraq. But the main problem is in the al-Maliki, who led his monopolistic and محاباته power of the Shiite majority at the expense of other groups, to ignite sectarian tensions. This made-Qaida in Iraq and other insurgent groups, more attractive to ممتعضين.

And administration officials are working behind the scenes, to calm the political differences between Maliki and Sunni and Kurdish leaders, and to find better relations between Iraq and other countries in the region. But in the absence of any change in opinion and approach by al-Maliki, the Iraqis and their country will remain seriously divided.

Ankara Court Rejects Retrial for Ocalan
    By Armando Cordoba

An Ankara court has unanimously rejected a retrial for Kurdistan Worker Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Ocalan, Turkey’s Bianet news reported.

Ocalan’s request for a retrial was submitted in a 26-page report by his defense attorneys under a new set of legal reforms.

In a recent interview with Rudaw regarding the retrial, his lawyers had cited the European Court of Human Rights’ condemnation of Ocalan’s original trial, and how his 1999 arrest in Kenya had violated international laws.

The human rights court also had questioned the impartiality of the judges who presided over Ocalan’s trial.

Cengiz Yürekli, a defense attorney for Ocalan, had said his team would petition the human rights court if Ocalan’s request for a retrial was denied by Turkey.

Ocalan is the founder of the PKK, which has been fighting for autonomy in Turkey since 1984.

He was jailed in 1999 and sentenced to death, but that was commuted to life imprisonment in 2002.

The PKK is in the middle of a historic peace process with Turkey – negotiated by Ocalan – to end a three-decade separatist war in which an estimated 40,000 people have died across Turkey.
