Article 6 of Kurdistan’s draft constitution says that Islamic Sharia is the basic source of legislation and that no laws can contradict the established tenets of Islam."

Opposition and ruling party MPs in Iraq's Kurdistan Regional Government remain at odds over a draft constitution for the Kurdish region, Press TV reports.

Opposition Islamic parties have noted that they are against attempts by the ruling party to secularize the constitution.

“The identity of the majority of Kurdistan’s population is Muslim. It is very unacceptable to create a constitution that is opposite the identity of the majority of people,” Kurdistan Islamic Union MP, Hawraz Sheikh Ahmed, said.

President of Kurdistan Regional Government Massoud Barzani was initially seeking to put the draft constitution to a referendum. However, the constitution was returned to the parliament after opposition parties demanded amendments.

Article 6 of Kurdistan’s draft constitution says that Islamic Sharia is the basic source of legislation and that no laws can contradict the established tenets of Islam.

At the moment, all articles of the constitution, including the Islamic article, are up for amendments.

As a result of the problem, MPs have decided to postpone the country's September presidential election.

Kurdistan has been an autonomous part of Iraq since 1991. Baghdad and the Kurdistan region have been at odds over a number of issues, including oil production and lands.

The Kurds are determined to maintain their autonomy and develop their own oil resources. They have signed contracts on their own terms over the past years, causing resentment in Iraq’s central government.

Baghdad and the Kurdistan region also lay claim to a tract of land that stretches from Iraq's eastern border with Iran to its western frontier with Syria.
