BAGHDAD – Former Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has visited Iran where he accused Arab countries of trying to divide Iraq.
On Sunday Maliki met with Iranian First Vice-President Eshaq Jahangiri in Tehran and said that “big plots” were being hatched in Iraq, and said the country must remain united in the face of its enemies.
The Iranian official also referred to “worrying” remarks by certain Western officials about dividing Iraq, and urged all Iraqi authorities and groups to maintain a solid position against the proposals.
Maliki, for his part, noted that some Western countries wish to see Iraq partitioned, saying, “They want the problems of Iraq to remain in place and prefer to divide the country rather than fighting Islamic State.”
The remarks came in reaction to the US Army’s outgoing Chief of Staff General Ray Odierno who claimed on Wednesday that reconciliation between Shi’ites and Sunnis in Iraq is becoming harder and that partitioning the country “might be the only solution.”
Jahangiri reaffirmed Tehran’s support for Iraq, saying, “The Islamic Republic of Iran will always support the Iraqi nation and government and this is has been highlighted by all Iranian authorities, especially the Supreme Leader and the president.
