Iraqi militias likely to exploit protests motivated by power shortages in southern Iraq escalating unrest in Basra
Zaineb al-Assam - IHS Jane's Country Risk Daily Repor - EVENT - On 16 July 2015 a protester was shot and killed by Iraqi security forces during protests in northern Basra in response to ongoing power shortages.
The death prompted further unrest near local government headquarters. According to daily newspaper Asharq al-Awsat, the protests were linked to a visit by former Iraqi prime minister and current vice-president Nouri al-Maliki to the area the day before, during which he reportedly criticised the lack of services being provided.
Another protest on 16 July was held outside the Majnoon oil field operated by Royal Dutch Shell, according to Iraq Oil Report. Further protests broke out in Nasiriyah in Dhi Qar province on 26 July according to Al Baghdadia news.
